Discussion:
Does eating red meat increase our height/muscle mass?

I noticed that populations which eat more red meat tends to be taller
than those populations that don't eat much red meat. For example, I
noticed that between Indians and Pakistanis, Indians eat less red
meat, and more chicken and fish. Pakistanis, OTOH, consume a lot more
red meat in the form of goat, lamb, and beef. As a result, the Pakis
are quite a bit taller and more robustly built.

Another example are the Balkan peoples - Bosnian, Croats, and
Serbian. Balkans are one of the tallest people in the world, and one
Serbian professor told me that this is the result of eating a lot of
red meat such as lamb.

I noticed that populations that eat lots of fish aren't neccessarily
taller, so this eliminated the notion that protein makes us taller.
It seems that all proteins are not the same, and that some proteins
make us taller (from red meats) than others (from lentils and fish).
Notice that Bangladeshis and Vietnamese aren't neccessarily taller.

Also, my opinion is that dairy products has a role in increasing the
height/weight of people, and the relation is positive (more dairy =
more height/build).

I realize that, in general, wealthier societies and people are taller
and better built. Morover, according to auxology, height is a very
plastic variable, and it's dependent on many things - i.e. family
size, child hood health care, DIET, stress levels, etc.

If any kind of meat eating can improve height or weight or strength,
chinese and Japanese would be the tallest guys. The entire premise is

What?? They only have recently started lots of meat-eating (not to
mention consuming fats).

The Chinese, numbering over a billion, would, statistically speaking,
include the widest spectrum of heights, which is why you have very
tall Chinese and very short ones. The belief among the Chinese
themselves is that those from the south tend to be short but clever,
while northerners are taller and more taciturn.

eskimos eat a red meat diet of whales, seals, fish and polar bears.

their brains nor body size are not any bigger. their body is adapted
to be smaller so that surface area is minimized so as not to lose heat.

Could be for the same reason that Scandinavians so often seem lean and
tall -- they only recently migrated into such geographic locales.

When evolutionary theorists suspect that protein allowed for bigger
brains, they're talking about evolution -- which takes place over tens
of thousands of years at its quickest.

Eskimos have big brains, just as all homo sapiens sapiens do, compared
to other primates.

This matter has nothing to do with perceived height differences
between ethnic and racial groups, but I just wanted to point out one
area where a protein diet has contributed a major impact. Again, the
impact is between species, not within individuals or individual groups
within a species.

I'm sure that the Chinese will see this same trend.

Well, they're certainly growing horizontally already! Obesity has

High susceptability to colon cancer
I believe that's due to high cooking temperatures, such as with open-
flame grilling, which results in carcinogens (ashes where the meat is
inevitably singed).

This could happen with all meats -- indeed, all food, including
vegetables -- that is cooked at very high temperatures.

.you don't get it with moderate am out of beef, but a diet with

Those are not caused by red meat or fat.

Blame that on sugar addiction.

http://www.all-about-lowering-cholesterol.com/causes-of-high-triglycerides.html

What are the causes of high triglycerides?

There are various causes of high triglycerides, and they are:

1. High fat foods and weight gain.

Triglyceride levels usually increase as your weight increases. Excess
calories, especially from sugar and alcohol are one of the causes of
high triglycerides. Alcohol increases your liver's production of
triglycerides and reduces the amount of fat cleared from your blood.
Also, high fat foods increase your triglycerides. For example, red
meat, dairy products.

Red meat was relevant to this post,no,but you had your nose in the
air,and began to pontificate on sugar...Dr Doolittle.

And still eat bacon and eggs for breakfast.

My triglyceride levels were running around 600 mg/dl when I was in
college. Lunch was generally a pack of donettes out of the vending
machine and a cherry coke. I ate almost no meat because I could not
afford it.

For the past several years now, they have been staying below 100 mg/dl
and I eat meat with every meal, red meat at least 4 or 5 times per week.

And I don't bother to avoid animal fat.

I've been it happen to others at work too when they went strict Atkins.

When my doctor (who is an endocrinologist) read my last profile in her

staying away from sugar and starch even without me saying anything to

Your getting it all wrong again, triglycerides with cholesterol are the
problem and causing blockages,we are talking red meat here, and not
sugars, your high triglyceride by it self is not going to have any
bearing on you adversely.at 600 mg/dl you are beyond the border line
of 500 mg/dl.and you at high risk ...like i said Triglycerides, along
with cholesterol, are the major sources of fat circulating in your
blood. Both are needed--cholesterol for building strong cells,
triglycerides for energy--but when either remains at high levels for
long periods of time, trouble results.

Very good response. Eskimos, for sure, eat lots of seals. Pakis,
like Punjabis in India, are quite tall, and they both eat lots of red

I noticed that populations which eat more red meat tends to be taller
than those populations that don't eat much red meat. For example, I
noticed that between Indians and Pakistanis, Indians eat less red
meat, and more chicken and fish. Pakistanis, OTOH, consume a lot more
red meat in the form of goat, lamb, and beef. As a result, the Pakis
are quite a bit taller and more robustly built.
Well, many Indians are of original, Dravidian stock, from the south,
very dark and quite short.

Another example are the Balkan peoples - Bosnian, Croats, and
Serbian. Balkans are one of the tallest people in the world, and one
Serbian professor told me that this is the result of eating a lot of
red meat such as lamb.
I don't know what's "tall"...6 feet seems normal to me...I'm 5'11"

I noticed that populations that eat lots of fish aren't neccessarily
taller, so this eliminated the notion that protein makes us taller.
It seems that all proteins are not the same, and that some proteins
make us taller (from red meats) than others (from lentils and fish).
Notice that Bangladeshis and Vietnamese aren't neccessarily taller.
Also, my opinion is that dairy products has a role in increasing the
height/weight of people, and the relation is positive (more dairy =
more height/build).
I think you're probably right about all that.
Post by Kaleidoscopic Perspectives
I realize that, in general, wealthier societies and people are taller
and better built. Morover, according to auxology, height is a very
plastic variable, and it's dependent on many things - i.e. family
size, child hood health care, DIET, stress levels, etc.
Yes, I don't think folks have quite figured this one out just yet.

In his book, Nathan Pritikin answers that question and says it is not
the protein, but the fat which makes people taller and heavier. But
he says it is a trade off and you endanger your health with more fat.
I do not know if he is right. Just commenting on what I read.

I can certainly agree with "heavier," and I'm sure fat has some role
in height as well.

Speaking of books, have you read Gary Taubes latest controversial
bestseller? He claims fat and calories aren't to blame for obesity
and disease -- neither a sedentary lifestyle! -- but carbs, carbs,
carbs.

Damn, this shit keeps swinging back and forth....

Just what are the molecular mechanisms behind the carb "toxicity"?
The body regulates blood sugar very precisely for a reason, so maybe
not the carbs but the failure in the regulation is at the root of this
problem.

It fails to regulate it properly after chronic long term
overconsumption. Hence the sky high levels of diabetes, heart disease,
etc. Adult onset diabetes is now called type 2 because teenagers are
now getting it. The huge spike in obesity and diabetes and heart
disease runs concurrent to and with an approx. 10 year lag behind the
switch to high fructose corn syrup as the prefferred sweetner after
it's development in the early 1970's.

I noticed that populations which eat more red meat tends to be taller
than those populations that don't eat much red meat. For example, I
noticed that between Indians and Pakistanis, Indians eat less red meat,
and more chicken and fish. Pakistanis, OTOH, consume a lot more red
meat in the form of goat, lamb, and beef. As a result, the Pakis are
quite a bit taller and more robustly built.
Nope. The Dutch are freak huge. What do they eat? Fries. Nothing but fries
and mayonnaise.

;-)

American Japanese are taller than native Japanese.
Can't remember where I read it, but some people attribute it to the
increase in red meat in their diets.

But I'm sure that the Dutch also eat lots of meat and dairy products
as well. After all, don't they have a very good dairy industry? With
dairy comes beef.
